In Alberta, an insurance inspection is a safety check that many insurers require for older vehicles (often 12+ years) before providing full coverage. It must be done by a licensed mechanic using the official Automobile Insurance Motor Vehicle Inspection Report form and focuses on key safety items: steering and suspension, brakes, tires, lights and electrical, windshield, exhaust, body condition, and seatbelts. If everything is roadworthy, the mechanic signs the form and you submit it to your insurance company within their required timeframe so they can finalize your policy.

Per-Purchase Inspection

A pre-purchase inspection (PPI) is a detailed safety and condition check done before buying a used vehicle so you know what you’re actually getting. It’s typically carried out by an independent licensed mechanic and focuses on key areas: engine and transmission, fluid leaks, brakes, suspension and steering, tires, frame, rust and collision damage, exhaust, electronics and safety systems (lights, airbags, ABS, etc.), plus a road test to check how the vehicle drives. The mechanic usually provides a written report highlighting any existing problems, safety concerns, and upcoming repairs or maintenance, helping you decide whether to buy the vehicle, negotiate the price, or walk away.

Turo Inspection

A Turo inspection is a basic safety and condition check done before listing a vehicle on Turo to make sure it’s safe and presentable for guests. It typically focuses on key areas: brakes, tires, lights and signals, windshield and wipers, seatbelts and airbags, fluid leaks, and overall body and interior condition (no major damage, everything works as it should). The goal is to confirm the vehicle is roadworthy, reliable, and meets Turo’s standards so guests can drive it safely and hosts can reduce the risk of breakdowns, complaints, or claims.
